“The market is more than just a sales outlet,” they state. “Our market is usually well attended by regular local residents who enjoy the social atmosphere, ability to catch up with community happenings and to be kept informed of events.”
This upcoming July market specifically aims to encourage greater participation from both stallholders and attendees by making it explicitly “For Locals.” Alongside the regular community information stall, there will be additional stalls offering insights into local businesses, organisations, community groups, and council services.

Whilst the current location at the Mapleton School Car Park offers some protection with its hard surface, the absence of covered space for all stallholders means markets occasionally require cancellation for safety when severe weather is forecast.

For conveners Donna and Paula, the inherent uncertainty of each market day—the unknown of how things will unfold—provides an energising element. “We are always a little on edge until the market is set up and running,” they confess. “What keeps us going is the great feedback we get from the stallholders, attendees, and many members of the community. Seeing the markets now deliver so much back to the community and many community groups is super satisfying.”

The long-term vision for Mapleton Country Markets focuses on preserving its unique identity. The organisers are committed to avoiding the trend of other markets becoming outlets for mass-produced goods, instead striving to maintain the “country” feel, friendly atmosphere, and diverse array of local crafts and produce. Whilst anticipating continued growth in attendance, the goal is sustainable growth that retains the market’s intimate, community-focused ambience without becoming overcrowded.
