Glasshouse Blue have claimed the 2026 Bowlers Paradise Hinterland Local League (BPHLL) title, defeating Palmwoods Hawks in a hard-fought Grand Final to cap off a historic season for the Sunshine Coast hinterland’s premier bowls competition.
The two-day finals series, played this weekend (21st-22nd March), was contested under grey skies and persistent showers, a familiar story for a season that has not been without its weather dramas. Two rounds were washed out entirely during the regular season, 14th February and 7th March, both Saturdays that fell victim to the kind of persistent rain the hinterland knows all too well. That all remaining games went ahead regardless is a testament to the commitment of the clubs involved. The finals weekend proved no different, with players rolling up through the showers and getting the job done. If the conditions were unkind at times, the bowling was anything but, with some of the tightest competition the league has seen in its 14-year history.
Finals Weekend: How It Unfolded
Saturday’s Quarter-Finals set the stage for a dramatic weekend. Glasshouse Yellow got their campaign under way with a win over Nambour Jade, while Glasshouse Blue disposed of Palmwoods Hawks to confirm their status as the team to beat. In what proved to be one of the weekend’s more closely-watched contests, Nambour Heights Orange overcame Pomona, while Palmwoods rounded out the day’s results with a victory over Maleny 2, who had fought hard to reach the finals series.
Saturday’s Semi-Finals produced two compelling contests. Nambour Jade reversed their earlier defeat to Glasshouse Yellow with a convincing win over Nambour Heights Orange, booking their spot in Sunday’s preliminary final. Palmwoods Hawks, meanwhile, proved too strong for Palmwoods in what shaped as a genuine hinterland derby.
Sunday’s Preliminary Finals, despite the odd squall, delivered the day’s most absorbing bowling. Palmwoods Hawks overcame Glasshouse Yellow to advance to the Grand Final, while Glasshouse Blue defeated Nambour Jade to secure their place as one of the two finalists.
The Grand Final brought together Glasshouse Blue and Palmwoods Hawks, and it was Glasshouse Blue who held their nerve across the four rinks to take the competition, confirming their standing as the BPHLL’s 2026 Season Champions.
A Historic Season
This year’s finals had added significance beyond the winners shield. The 2026 season marks the BPHLL’s first as an Open competition, following a league-wide vote to retire the separate Ladies and Men’s divisions in favour of integrated club teams. The new format sees 11 players per team competing across four rinks in a mixture of Pairs, Triples, and Fours, the same format historically used in the men’s competition.
It is a change that has quietly reshaped the weekend’s story. Glasshouse Yellow, who were the 2025 Ladies’ champions, and Glasshouse Blue, the 2025 Men’s champions, both made the final four, suggesting the integration has given clubs with strong depth across their entire membership a genuine edge.
The competition’s founding season statistics speak to the scale of the enterprise: 21 Open teams from 11 clubs competed across nine weeks, in what the BPHLL considers Australia’s largest non-affiliated bowls competition.
A new chapter also comes with new shield. Nambour Heights’ own Barry Neil, founder and former organiser of the BPHLL, donated a magnificent new Open Championship Shield for the 2026 season, a fitting tribute to the man whose vision gave the league its life back in 2013.
The Competition Organiser’s View
Andrew Friday, the BPHLL’s competition organiser, said the weekend’s results reflected the growing depth of the competition. “It’s been a fantastic finals series and a great way to close what has been a genuinely historic season for the BPHLL. The move to Open teams has brought a real energy to the competition, clubs are coming together in new ways, and you can see that on the greens. The weather made things interesting, but that’s bowls in the hinterland. Congratulations to Glasshouse Blue on a well-deserved championship.”
