The Hinterland Quarry Action Group has announced a significant victory for the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Sunshine Coast Council has officially terminated the Expression of Interest (EOI) process for the operation of its Image Flat and Dulong Quarries. This decision, effective December 20th, 2024, follows two years of sustained community advocacy and pressure.
Council will now retain full ownership and operational control over these public assets, abandoning plans to seek a private operator. This move addresses the community’s deep concerns regarding the potential for increased quarry activity and its environmental and social impacts.
The Hinterland Quarry Action Group has expressed its sincere gratitude to the entire hinterland community, various community groups, Cr David Law, the dedicated Action Group committee, and the current Sunshine Coast Council leadership for their invaluable support and contributions in achieving this outcome.
While this marks a significant victory, the Action Group emphasises the importance of continued community engagement. The upcoming Planning Scheme review in 2025 will provide an opportunity to address remaining concerns and ensure a sustainable future for the region.
