Falls Farm’s Open Day on August 2nd drew visitors from across Southeast Queensland, highlighting growing community interest in sustainable farming practices and local food production. The event, held as part of the Curated Plate Festival, successfully connected local producers with both consumers and professional chefs.
The farm, which has been operating in Mapleton since 2013, opened its gates to showcase regenerative agriculture methods that are increasingly recognised as crucial for environmental sustainability and food security.
Diverse Attendance Reflects Growing Local Food Movement
“We had lots of locals pop their heads in to see what we do here at the farm as well as visitors from Brisbane and the surrounding Sunshine Coast region,” said a Falls Farm representative. The diverse attendance included families seeking weekend activities, food enthusiasts interested in farm-to-table practices, and restaurant professionals.
The professional interest was particularly notable, with established chef customers attending alongside new potential buyers looking to source locally-grown ingredients for their restaurants. According to the farm, “The chefs who visited have a better understanding of what we do at the farm now and have shown more interest in using our produce.”
Educational Focus on Regenerative Agriculture
Two guided farm tours provided visitors with hands-on education about sustainable farming methods. Tours covered the property’s market gardens, established orchards, and bush regeneration projects, with particular emphasis on the specialised tools and techniques that make small-scale farming efficient.
“We spoke about our regenerative farming practices and how this contributes to our soil health, plant health and therefore healthy crops that are not only more nutrient dense but also taste better,” the farm explained. This approach represents a growing trend among local producers who prioritise environmental stewardship alongside food production.
The educational component addresses increasing consumer interest in understanding where their food comes from and how farming practices impact both nutrition and environmental sustainability.
Community Engagement Through Food and Family Activities
Beyond education, the event successfully created a community gathering space. A tasting table allowed visitors to sample different varieties of seasonal produce, while an on-site market stall enabled immediate purchases of fresh vegetables, fruits, and homemade preserves.
Despite chilly winter weather, families utilised the farm’s spacious grounds for BYO picnics, creating an atmosphere that combined learning with leisure. The format demonstrates how agricultural education can be made accessible and enjoyable for all ages.
Supporting Local Food Systems
The Open Day reflects broader community trends toward supporting local food systems and understanding agricultural practices. While Falls Farm has no immediate special events planned, they maintain regular presence at monthly Mapleton Markets, where community members can access their seasonal winter produce including carrots, beetroots, radish, turnips, cabbages, broccolini, chard, kales, citrus, ginger and much more.
