In a world where maternal mortality remains a stark reality for countless women, the Zonta Blackall Range stands as a beacon of hope, actively supporting the life-saving work of the Birthing Kit Foundation (Australia) (BKFA).
Globally, approximately 300,000 women and over 3 million newborns die annually during childbirth, often due to preventable complications stemming from poor hygiene and limited medical resources. The BKFA, a dedicated humanitarian organisation, addresses this crisis by providing clean birthing kits and essential education on hygienic childbirth practices to women in remote and developing regions.
Working collaboratively with the Australian community and international partners, the BKFA assembles and distributes clean birthing kits to pregnant women in resource-constrained settings across Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and the Indo-Pacific. To date, the organisation has successfully distributed over 2.8 million kits. These kits reach women through community outreach programs, health facilities, and trained traditional birth attendants, ensuring safer birthing environments where professional medical care is scarce.
Zonta Blackall Range plays a pivotal role in this global endeavour, assembling over 600 birthing kits each year. Local volunteers unite to pack these vital kits, each containing essential supplies designed to minimise infection and enhance hygiene during labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period. Each kit includes:
- Soap: For handwashing by birth attendants and perineal cleaning by mothers.
- Plastic Sheet: To create a clean surface, preventing contact with unsanitary ground.
- Gloves: To protect both birth attendants and mothers from infections, including HIV.
- Gauze: For cleaning the newborn’s eyes and the mother’s perineum.
- Cord Ties: To securely tie the umbilical cord.
- Sterile Blade: To ensure a clean umbilical cord cut, reducing the risk of newborn sepsis and tetanus.
“These kits represent more than just supplies; they are a lifeline,” said a spokesperson for Zonta Blackall Range. “Knowing that our local efforts directly translate to saved lives across the globe is profoundly rewarding.”
While the Birthing Kit Foundation (Australia) focuses its efforts on international aid, it’s essential to understand that the Australian healthcare system strives to provide comprehensive maternal care for all women within the country. This includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Whilst, it is important to acknowledge that maternal health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres strait islander women are still disproportionately worse than for non-indigenous women. The BKFA’s focus is on regions where such healthcare infrastructure is severely limited or non-existent.
The BKFA’s impact is undeniable. They have provided kits to women in over 30 countries, trained over 10,000 traditional birth attendants, and contributed to efforts aimed at preventing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in affected communities.
Each kit costs only AU$5, a small investment with significant impact. The BKFA prioritises environmental sustainability, using biodegradable plastic bags and sheets treated with organic compounds, and conducts annual social and environmental impact reviews.
