Following a devastating fire that destroyed the toilet block and waste treatment system at the Mapleton Falls National Park day-use area in October, local MP Marty Hunt has provided an update on the rebuilding efforts.
The fire, which authorities believe was deliberately lit, caused significant damage to the essential facilities. “It is disheartening to see our community facilities targeted in this way,” Mr. Hunt expressed.
In response, the damaged structures were decommissioned and disposed of. A “like-for-like” replacement of the toilet block and waste treatment system has been approved through the Queensland Government Insurance Fund (QGIF).
“Plans are now underway to reconstruct a four-cubicle toilet block and replace the waste treatment system,” Mr. Hunt said. “Construction is expected to be completed by December this year, subject to weather conditions and contractor availability.”
To ensure public access during the rebuilding phase, three portable toilets have been installed at the site (NB: there is no disabled access to these temporary facilities).
The total estimated cost for the reconstruction project is $485,000.
