The Mapleton Lilyponds are about to get a whole lot more active, thanks to overwhelming community support for a new basketball/netball half court. A recent survey revealed a resounding “yes” to the project, promising to inject fresh energy into the popular recreational space.
The initiative, driven by a desire to enhance community facilities, saw a significant response during November 2024. Residents were asked to weigh in on the proposal, and the results speak for themselves. A remarkable 87% of respondents expressed strong support for the half court, highlighting the community’s enthusiasm for the project.
Furthermore, the proposed location within the active youth zone, south of the skate park and west of the existing playground, garnered 81% approval. This strategic placement aims to create a cohesive recreational hub, catering to a diverse range of interests and age groups.
“The strong community engagement in this project has been fantastic” a community representative said. “It’s a clear indication that residents are eager for more opportunities to engage in outdoor activities and build a stronger community spirit.”
Beyond basketball and netball, the community voiced a desire for pickleball facilities. Responding to this feedback, the project planners have confirmed that pickleball line marking will be included on the court. This inclusion reflects a growing trend, with pickleball’s popularity surging globally. As reported by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in many countries. The inclusion of pickleball lines caters to a wider demographic, and allows for more varied recreational usage of the new space.
The positive survey results have paved the way for the project’s progression. With confirmed community backing, funding has been allocated for construction to commence later this year.
