The Montville Tennis Club has commenced an exciting extension project to build dedicated toilet and change room facilities for women and girls, including those with disabilities. Directly attached to the existing pavilion, these conveniently located and accessible amenities are a direct result of a successful Commonwealth grant aimed at boosting female participation in sport. The club is also contributing significantly to the approximately $200,000 project.
This initiative directly addresses the Australian government’s policy to promote equitable opportunities in sport by removing barriers to participation. The new development will feature three toilets, including one accessible toilet and shower, along with a new waste treatment plant and improved pathways for safer access to both the facilities and the courts.
“Securing the grant funding was a major milestone and a testament to the hard work and commitment of our committee members,” said Club Secretary, Grace Pettersen.
Commencing in April 2025, the project is expected to be completed by early October 2025, weather permitting. Initial challenges include wet weather delays and trade availability. The materials selected prioritize low maintenance and long-term durability.
The upgraded facilities are anticipated to significantly benefit the entire club by fostering greater participation among women and girls, ensuring a more inclusive environment for everyone. Coach Ian Cowan noted, “With the new facilities, we’ll be able to expand our junior development programs and introduce initiatives to get more families involved in tennis.” Parent Skye added, “As a parent of junior players, I’m particularly excited about the expanded programs the new facilities will enable. My daughter loves her tennis, and this will make her experience even better.”
