Construction on permanent facilities to begin next month following arson attack and design delays
Visitors to Mapleton Falls National Park will soon see the end of a 15-month reliance on portable toilets, with construction of a new permanent amenities block scheduled to begin in early February.
The Nicklin Electorate Office has confirmed that the procurement process for the replacement facility is now complete, with work expected to commence in the first week of February and reach completion by 30 April 2026.
The original toilet block and waste treatment system were destroyed by fire on Sunday, 13 October 2024, in what authorities believe was a deliberate act of arson. Rural Fire crews from Mapleton and Kureelpa, along with Nambour urban crews, attended the blaze.
Three portable toilets were installed at the day-use area on 14 October 2024 as a temporary measure. However, the interim facilities have no disabled access, with the nearest accessible toilet located at the separate Mapleton day-use area within Mapleton National Park, within a five-minute drive.
The Mapleton day-use area is one of several picnic and recreational sites within Mapleton National Park, located on land that once served as an old forest station amongst majestic tall blackbutt trees.
Delays attributed to regulatory compliance
Member for Nicklin Marty Hunt’s office advised the Mapleton and District Community Association (MADCA) this week that “necessary changes to the project’s scope to meet current standards and regulations required additional planning”, accounting for the extended timeline between the fire and construction commencement.
The new facility will be a four-cubicle wheelchair-accessible toilet block with an upgraded waste treatment system designed to meet current environmental and safety standards.
A spokesperson for the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation acknowledged the community’s patience.
“The deliberate damage to public toilets in Mapleton Falls National Park was incredibly disappointing and everyone’s patience and understanding whilst the facilities has been reconstructed is appreciated,” the spokesperson said.
“A new four-cubicle wheelchair-accessible toilet block and waste treatment facility is expected to open in the first half of 2026.”
Community frustration over basic infrastructure
The extended closure period has drawn attention to broader infrastructure challenges across the Blackall Range, particularly regarding accessible public facilities.
Local advocacy group MADCA has been vocal about the need for improved public amenities in the region, with the Mapleton Falls closure occurring against the backdrop of ongoing community debate over toilet facilities at other local sites, including Lilyponds Park.
The fire occurred at one of the hinterland’s flagship tourist destinations, a popular lookout and walking area that attracts thousands of visitors annually.
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) park alerts remain in place, advising visitors to observe all signage and barriers and avoid closed areas. The alerts are currently listed as active until 30 April 2026, coinciding with the estimated completion date for the new block.
Mr Hunt expressed disappointment at the original act of vandalism when the fire occurred.
“It is disheartening to see our community facilities targeted in this way,” he said at the time.
The total estimated cost for the reconstruction project has been approved through the Queensland Government Insurance Fund (QGIF), with earlier estimates placing the figure at $485,000.
Local residents and visitors are encouraged to plan accordingly whilst the temporary facilities remain in place over the coming months, with construction activity expected at the site from February through to the end of April.
