For more than a decade, the Mapleton and District Community Association (MADCA) has been a strong advocate for residents on the issue of liquid waste management. The topic became even more pressing following the Sunshine Coast Regional Council’s (SCRC) decision to discontinue its coordinated liquid waste holding tank collection service on July 9, 2023. This change—prompted by a 2022 review citing rising costs and the availability of private providers—affected around 650 properties in our community, leaving homeowners to make independent arrangements.
In response, some residents began exploring on-site liquid waste treatment systems as an alternative to traditional pump-outs. While this can be a long-term solution for some households, it involves a complex installation process and isn’t feasible for all properties. During the early days of this transition, Division 10 Councillor David Law offered support to property owners contemplating on site treatment systems. Acting as a liaison to Council departments, he assisted with initial assessments of property suitability for on-site systems. Looking ahead, MADCA continues to seek viable, sustainable alternatives to the ongoing reliance on pump-out services. As part of this effort, MADCA’s upcoming General Meeting will include a key presentation and community discussion on wastewater alternatives.

The evening will feature guest speaker Brett Fairlamb, a local expert with extensive experience installing sewage treatment systems for small communities. Brett will present practical insights and explore possible alternatives to the current pump-out services, which could save householders significant costs. His presentation will invite input from residents and businesses currently using pump-out systems, addressing the unique challenges faced in our region.
In addition, MADCA Vice President Peter Gamgee will present recent data collected on household pump-out costs across the area. This analysis is expected to reveal significant financial discrepancies between properties and highlight the potential cost savings of alternative systems.
This meeting is an important opportunity for all residents currently using pump-out systems to learn about future options and participate in shaping a more affordable and environmentally responsible approach to wastewater management.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to register for ongoing updates as the project evolves.
