Nicklin MP Rob Skelton is calling for a new Satellite Hospital to be built on the Sunshine Coast, citing the success of similar facilities in South East Queensland.
Satellite Hospitals offer a range of services for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries, including minor injuries, infections, and burns. They also provide vital outpatient services such as mental health support, kidney dialysis, and other allied health treatments. Importantly, these facilities are open seven days a week, free for Medicare cardholders, and require no appointments.
Since their introduction, the seven Satellite Hospitals already operating in South East Queensland have seen over 130,000 patients, significantly reducing the strain on local emergency departments.
Mr Skelton believes a Satellite Hospital on the Sunshine Coast would bring similar benefits to the local community. “This would mean more accessible, free healthcare for our residents,” he said. “We can experience firsthand the positive impact these facilities have.”
To gauge community support, Mr Skelton has launched a petition and encourages residents to share their thoughts and concerns. His office is also available for any questions or suggestions.
