As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the humanitarian crisis deepens, with millions of families facing harsh conditions and a struggle for survival. Destroyed infrastructure has left communities without essential services, access to heating and cooking facilities has become a critical concern. In response to this urgent need, Lions International, including Lions Australia, and our very own Blackall Range Lions Club are taking action to provide a lifeline to those in need.
The Dire Situation in Ukraine
The ongoing conflict has caused severe damage to civilian infrastructure, particularly in southeast Ukraine. This destruction has left countless families without access to reliable heating or the ability to cook meals. With gas and diesel supplies dwindling, many are forced to rely on wood as their primary energy source. However, without proper stoves, families face the double threat of freezing temperatures and the inability to prepare food, exacerbating an already desperate situation. The urgency of this crisis has been highlighted by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, who has urged citizens to seek alternative sources of power and heat.
A Practical Solution: The Lions Stove Project
Lions International has stepped in to provide a practical and effective solution: specially designed wood-burning stoves. These “LIONS stoves” are made of steel and are designed to be highly effective for heating and feature a large surface for cooking food. They also include an ash box to collect ashes and control the draft, enhancing their efficiency and safety. Recognising the importance of clear instructions, the stoves come with manuals in both English and Ukrainian.
Importantly, these stoves are designed to be cost-effective in terms of manufacture, transport, and ongoing maintenance, ensuring that resources are used efficiently to help as many people as possible. The design is based on thorough market research and collaboration with production partners and is produced under a free Creative Commons license from Konekansa design.
Global Effort, Local Action
This project is a testament to the power of global collaboration. Lions Clubs worldwide have joined forces to support this crucial initiative, and our own Blackall Range Lions Club is playing a vital role in bringing this support to those in need. While the Lions Club is well-known for its dedication to local community projects, their support for the Ukraine Stove Project demonstrates their commitment to broader humanitarian concerns.
Progress and Goals
The project has already made significant strides. As of December 2024, 8,000 stoves have been funded, built, and delivered to families in Ukraine. The project’s ambitious goal is to provide 15,000 stoves by 30th April 2025.
